Anaemia

Anaemia

Anaemia is defined as a decrease in red blood cell (RBC) mass. The hemoglobin in RBC delivers oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. The decrease in the number of RBCs transferring oxygen and carbon dioxide diminishes the body’s ability for gaseous exchange. The decrease may be caused from blood loss, increased destruction of RBCs (hemolysis), or decreased production of RBCs. Out of different types of Anaemia, Iron deficiency Anaemia is the most common type.

Pandu Roga in Ayurveda resembles Anaemia of modern science. Ayurveda uses the inherent power of natural herbs to overcome Anaemia of extrinsic and intrinsic origins. The herbal drugs used in Ayurveda helps in clearing the minute channels of the body thus increasing the process of efficient metabolism which further helps in production of nutrient factors required for nourishing all the tissues including Rakta (blood).

Venous Insufficiency Varicose vein

Venous Insufficiency Varicose vein

Varicosity is disorder of veins where veins become tortuous, twisted, or lengthened, usually of legs. Risk factors can be categorized as hormonal, lifestyle, acquired, and inherited. Size alone cannot determine an abnormality, because the size depends on ambient body temperature and, in women, hormonal factors, except for if the enlargement is severe. The normal superficial veins in a thin person can be misjudged as an enlarged one, whereas varicose veins in an obese person may be hidden.

Varicose veins can be categorized as trunk, reticular, or telangiectasia. Telangiectasia may also be referred to as matted veins, thread veins, star bursts or spider veins. Most commonly seen varicose veins are primary and secondary types occur due to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis and occlusion, pelvic tumors, or arterio-venous fistula.

Siragrandhi mentioned in Ayurveda is caused due to the accumulation of impure blood and vitiation of vata in the veins leading to dilation of veins and tortuosity. Ayurveda advises internal  medicines  primarily  aiming  in  pitta  shamana  (pacifies pitta)  and  Raktaprasadaka  (blood  purifying) thereby  clearing  the  underlying  pathology  of Siragranthi.

Treatment tips:

  • Elevate the legs using pillows or any other props overnight or for a few hours during the day time.
  • Massage therapies utilizing pressures onto the muscles in the upward direction of the legs also results in good circulation and proper drainage of blood.
