Both Brown henna (Lawsonia inermis) and Blue henna (Indigofera tinctoria) are available in several Indian groceries, super markets and herbal stores. Kanjunnyadi keram will be available at any Ayurveda centres in Dubai. Some natural hair coloring tips as below:
- The plant Henna (Lawsonia inermis, family Lythraceae) known ashina, the henna tree, the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet will stain the hair and skin if the tender leaves are smashed with a mildly acidic liquid like lemon juice or tea decoction which will release the coloring molecule – Lawsone. When applied on skin or hair, Lawson molecule migrate from the henna paste into the outer layer of the hair or skin and bind to the proteins in it, creating a stain. Essential oils such as tea tree, eucalyptus, or lavender, will improve skin stain characteristics.
- If you are looking for a burgundy shade, grind a beetroot and mix this juice into henna to make a paste.
- Those who like a more reddish-brown color can mix henna with some lemon juice and curd along with some tea decoction.
- Indigo (neel) gives a blue color dye - Indigotin; dye of Indigofera tinctoria is obtained from the processing of the plant's leaves. The dye taken from Indigo is used to color jeans and food items. Brown Henna (Lawsonia inermis) alone gives a copper red color and only; by combining henna with indigo in different proportions, you can get varying shades of brown. If you want a redder color, keep henna levels high and if you like browner, include more of indigo. By itself, Amla (Indian gooseberry) does not have the ability to dye hair; however, it can help to tone down the red or brown color of a henna-indigo hair color. Amla also helps to give a natural shine to the hair after you wash off the dye. Add curry leaves to Indigo-Henna mixture for blackish shades.
- Both tea and coffee as concentrated decoction have the ability to dye hair a dark brown.
- Beetroot juice, carrot juice can be used to add red tints to your current color.
- Paste of Hibiscus flower gives deep red/burgundy color; Hibiscus mixed with Henna is a good combination.
- Rhubarb root with its presence of an ingredient, Chrysophanic acid, produces a yellowish brown dye when applied on hair. Rhubarb roots in combination with Cassia Obovata (Neutral Henna; not coloring agent) are often used as blonde henna.
