It is important to understand the normal hair growth cycle to understand hair loss. Approximately 85% of all hairs are in the growing phase at any one time. This phase can vary from 2-7 years; hair grows approximately 10cm per year. At the end of the Growth phase the hairs enters into a Transitional phase which lasts about 1-2 weeks, during this phase, the hair follicle (not the shaft) shrinks.

The resting phase follows the Transitional phase and normally lasts about 5-6 weeks. During this time the hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle. Approximately 10-15% of all hairs are in this phase at one time. At the end of the resting phase the hair follicle re-enters the growth phase; a new hair begins to form. If the old hair has not already been shed the new hair pushes the old one out and the growth cycle starts all over again.

A variety of factors can affect the hair growth cycle and cause temporary or permanent hair loss including exposure to chemicals, hormonal and nutritional factors, thyroid disease, generalized or local skin disease, and stress. As the details are no sufficient to judge the cause; take her to an Ayurveda doctor for a prompt diagnosis. She may require internal medications; she could try Kanjunnyadi keram or Neelibhringadi keram for external application on scalp before shower.
