A change in lifestyle habits is a must, and reduce intake of refined carbohydrates
I am 19-years-old. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) and was told to lose some weight. I did, but last year put on weight again. Now I see symptoms of PCOD reappear. Is there a cure in Ayurveda?
Changing levels of hormones produced by the pituitary gland and by the ovaries regulate a normal reproductive cycle in females. The pituitary gland produces follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH), which control the growth and release of eggs in the ovaries. Your ovaries secrete the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which prepare the lining of the uterus to receive a fertilised egg. The ovaries also produce some male hormones. If pregnancy doesn’t occur, estrogen and progesterone secretion decline and the lining of the uterus is shed during menstruation.
In polycystic ovary syndrome, when the ovulation fails, the pituitary produces more LH in an effort to trigger ovulation. The follicular cells of ovaries respond to it by secreting more male hormones.
These male hormones cause many of the signs and symptoms of PCOD.
Doctors don’t know the cause of ovulation failure, but the factors that likely play a role are excess insulin, inflammation and hereditary factors.
According to Ayurveda, PCOD is a Kapha–Vata imbalance. Treatment objective and approach is similar in both conventional medicine and Ayurveda, though interpreted in different expressions.
Favour lifestyle habits that reduce body weight and insulin resistance. Favour spicy and warm foods, sesame seeds, horse gram, whole grains, barley, corn, brown rice, sprouts, ginger, peppers, spices, sunflower seeds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. Also take regular exercise.
There are several licensed Ayurveda clinics in Dubai; meet an expert for a detailed examination.
You may check your thyroid functions too. And reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates.
