Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal discs in the neck. The cervical refers to seven stacked vertebrae in the neck. Spondylosis begins when parts of the spine start to wear out. As the discs dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs). More than 85% of people older than age 60 are affected by cervical spondylosis, but this can happen when people are even in their 30s-40s.

The symptoms of cervical spondylosis include neck stiffness and pain, headache that may originate in the neck, pain in the shoulder or arms, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the arms, hands, inability to fully turn the head or bend the neck, grinding noise or sensation when the neck is turned. Less common, or atypical symptoms include vertigo, headache, palpitation, nausea, discomfort in your abdomen or GI system, tinnitus, blurred vision, and memory problems (hypomnesia). For some people, cervical spondylosis causes no symptoms.

Different diseases described in Charak Samhita, Susrutha Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya like Manyasthambha, and Greevagraha, Viswachi, etc have one more symptom similar to Cervical spondylosis. According to Ayurveda, the symptoms of cervical spondylosis are due to Vata Dosha imbalance .Ayurveda opines that Vata dosha will be predominant during old age. Aggravation of Vata results in the degeneration of body tissues. Due to the roughness of Vata, vertebrae become dry and rough resulting in the degeneration of discs and vertebrae causing pain. Kapha dosha causes stiffness and disabilities.
