Turmeric (Botanical Name – Curcuma longa) root is traditionally called "Indian saffron" because of its deep yellow-orange color. Turmeric is a natural wonder; it is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and antiseptic herbs available. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric has a wide range of therapeutic effects. Turmeric is also rich in Manganese, Iron, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium and fibers. As per Ayurveda, turmeric is spicy and bitter in taste; post digestive effect is spicy; potency is hot; and it balances Kapha and Pitta.

I give turmeric, either individually or mixed with other herbs in conditions like – arthritis, flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, toothache, bruises, chest pain, colic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), dyspepsia, jaundice, bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, diabetes etc. Application of turmeric to the skin is effective for pain, ringworm, bruising, insect bites, eye infections, inflammatory skin conditions, soreness inside of the mouth, and infected wounds.  Turmeric also exhibits a protective effect on the liver, anti-tumor action, and has ability to reduce inflammation and fight certain infections. Curcumin inhibits growth and spread of some forms of cancer, including prostate, breast, skin, and colon.

Turmeric can be included in food for daily intake; sprinkling turmeric on vegetables or mixing it into dressings is safe and effective; recommended dose is 1-3 grams dry powder per day. However, excessive use of curcumin may produce stomach upset in certain cases. Take special precautions during pregnancy, gall bladder problems, GERD, before and after a surgical procedure and while taking anti-coagulant medicines. Turmeric can be beneficial for preventing gall stones while the use of same is contra-indicated in patients with active gallstones causing obstruction.
