Is turmeric safe if consumed every day?
Turmeric can be included in food for daily intake, but excessive use of curcumin may produce stomach upset
I have been recently hit by influenza and have been taking hot water with a pinch of turmeric. However I’m concerned if the turmeric increaes the heat in the body if consumed every day?
As per Ayurveda, turmeric is spicy and bitter in taste; post digestive effect is spicy, potency is hot and it balances Kapha and Pitta. Therefore, it is an effective home remedy for allergic rhinitis and influenza in winters. I usually suggest half teaspoon turmeric powder boiled with a glass of milk for rhinitis. Boiling with cold potency milk will balance out turmeric’s warm potency. One may reduce turmeric use in summer.
Turmeric can be included in food for daily intake; sprinkling turmeric on vegetables or mixing it into dressings is safe and effective. The recommended dose is 1-3gm dry powder per day. However, excessive use of curcumin may produce stomach upset in certain cases. Take special precautions during pregnancy, gall bladder problems, GERD, before and after a surgical procedure and while taking anti-coagulant medicines.
Turmeric can be beneficial for preventing gall stones while the use of same is contra-indicated in patients with active gallstones causing obstruction. Pitta body type people may sometimes experience increased body heat with turmeric use.
Turmeric is a natural wonder; it is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and antiseptic herbs available. Some therapeutic uses of turmeric as per ayurveda:
