TONSILLITIS & ADENOIDS
We might associate thoughts of tonsillitis with images shows in the hospital, but tonsillitis doesn’t always mean you need to get your tonsils removed. If you get a tonsillitis diagnosis, it just means that your tonsils, located at the back of your throat and pain when you swallow, especially when accompanied by a fever, headache, swollen glands in the neck or feeling ill. A sore throat doesn’t always need treatment and can go away by itself. However, if you’re having trouble breathing, troublesome swallowing, you should schedule an appointment with a doctor.
So what is Adenoids & tonsillitis? The nasopharyngeal tonsils, commonly called adenoids, is situated at the junction of the roof and posterior wall of nasopharynx. Adenoid tissue is present at birth, shows physiological enlargement up to 6 years of age. And tends to atrophy at puberty, disappears by the age of 20. Then why they cause trouble? Certain children have a tendency to generalised lymphoid hyperplasia (adenoids also take part). Recurrent rhinitis, sinusitis etc cause adenoid infection. Allergy of respiratory tract also another cause. Clinically adenoids cause nasal, aural (ear) or general symptoms. Including nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, nasal discharge, sinusitis, epistaxis (nasal bleeding), voice change, otitis media, pus discharge from ears, adenoid facies (child has elongated face with dull expression, open mouth for breathing, pinched nose), adenoid mass can be seen with mirror. Detailed nasal examination is always needed.
In case of tonsillitis, tonsils are the most important organ that helps fight off infections. These tonsils become clogged with bacteria and food particles. When this happens, the tonsils become inflamed, starts to get swollen, this condition is called tonsillitis. Symptoms like sore throat, ear pain, pain increases with swallowing, cough, fever, headache, feel tired, swollen and tender glands.
Frequent questions asked by parents is my child has tonsillitis, is this contagious? Not every tonsillitis is contagious, but at the same time there are certain types tonsillitis are infectious, most commonly being viral. Streptococcal bacterial infections can spread from one person to another easily.
